In 1933, two brothers founded the E&J Gallo Winery in Modesto, California, and despite being in the middle of the Great Depression, sold 177,847 gallons of wine in their very first year of operation. After 25 years of success, the Gallo Glass Company was established, and today operates the largest single glass plant. By 1966, E&J Gallo was recognized as the largest winery in the US based on sales volume. They continued to grow from there, opening an international office in London in 1983 and introducing Bartles & Jaymes wine coolers the following year. In 1999, they were named “Winery of the Century” by the Los Angeles County Fair’s Wines of the Americas competition. Since then, they have won various awards and recognitions, from Importer of the Year (Wine Enthusiast) to #14 out of 100 Best Places to Work (Glassdoor).
